About Me

I started on the backend. That's still how I design.

I'm Hamzah, a product engineer based in Tegal, Central Java. I came into product work through a backend internship, spent years designing interfaces other people would build, and now do both — which mostly means I find out early when an idea won't survive implementation.

How I Think

Four things I keep deciding

01Decide with the constraint in view

A design that can't be built is a proposal, not a decision. I go looking for the limit first — the endpoint, the offline case, the slow connection — and design toward it.

02Borrow what's already validated

MindSpace used DASS-21, a clinical instrument, rather than questions I made up. The trust came from the instrument; the interface only had to not get in its way.

03One system, many surfaces

Foodmedia's customer, merchant, and driver apps are three products speaking one component language. Systems outlive screens.

04Name it once

Investree's three tools became one largely because the naming and the tokens finally agreed. Most consistency problems turn out to be vocabulary problems.

How I Work

What happens between the brief and the build

No framework, no acronym — just the order things tend to happen in.

  1. 01Start where it breaks

Before anything gets drawn I go looking for where the current thing fails. For Foodmedia that meant sitting in restaurants, watching merchants take orders on paper.

  2. 02Draw against the data

Screens get designed next to the entities and endpoints they depend on, not after them. It is the quickest way to find the screen that cannot exist.

  3. 03Build the risky part first

The status that customer, merchant, and driver all had to see at the same moment was the part most likely to break, so it was the part built earliest.

  4. 04Hand off to myself

Design and implementation sit in one head here. That removes the argument about what was meant — and removes the excuse when it ships wrong.

  5. 05Ship, then keep looking

Released work is where the honest feedback lives. Apps in production are also places to be corrected in public.

Personal

The part that isn't a job title

I live and work in Tegal, a coastal town in Central Java. Most of what I build is made here, and a fair amount of the collaboration happens in writing — which has made me a more careful documenter than I would otherwise be.

My final-year project was a mental-health screening tool for people who work in tech. I picked it because the industry I was about to join is not especially good at saying when it is struggling. The research was accepted into the university repository, and it is still the first thing I would point at.

I came in through the back door: a backend internship in 2020, then a web role, then interface design. None of that was planned. It is also the reason I have never been able to treat design and engineering as two separate departments.
